Star Spangled Banner , l'hymne national américain
The Star-Spangled Banner (La Bannière étoilée) est un poème écrit en 1814 par Francis Scott Key et qui constitue à présent l'hymne national des États-Unis d'Amérique. Avocat de 35 ans et poète amateur, Key l'a écrit après avoir assisté, pendant la guerre de 1812, au bombardement de Fort McHenry à Baltimore, dans le Maryland, par des navires de la Royal Navy britanniques entrés dans la baie de Chesapeake. Le texte rend hommage à la résistance héroïque de ceux qui défendirent le fort et qui furent en mesure de faire flotter le drapeau américain au sommet en dépit de l'acharnement de l'ennemi à y planter le sien.
Joué sur l'air de To Anacreon in Heaven, une chanson populaire anglaise, ce poème est devenu bien connu en tant que chant patriotique américain. Il a été reconnu pour un usage officiel par la marine américaine en 1889 et par la Maison-Blanche en 1916, et a été adopté comme hymne national par une résolution du Congrès en date du 3 mars 1931. La chanson se compose de quatre strophes, mais généralement seule la première strophe et le premier refrain sont chantés aujourd'hui.
En 1969, au Festival de Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix jouera une version historique de The Star-Spangled Banner en solo, tout en distorsion, évoquant des lâchers de bombes (on est en pleine guerre du Vietnam, dénoncée par le courant de « contre-culture » dont Woodstock aura été un des moments forts)[1].
En 2006, afin de venir en aide aux immigrants latino-américains aux États-Unis Wyclef Jean enregistre Nuestro Himno, version en espagnol , avec de nombreux artistes[
